People are motivated to change by their circumstances, Regardless of where you are in life right now. I would support this claim by citing a particular scenario on “The Alchemist” when the King unravels the secret to Santiago on how to achieve his personal legend, this made him realize that everything is possible if you just act on it and believe that the universe will conspire to make it happen. A spur of the inner self that tells us that change is possible if we really believe in something that it can happen.
As Henry Ford would
quote “Whether you believe it will happen or not, either way, you are right”. A
lot of people really have that intent and desire to change but unfortunately, sometimes they seem to be stuck in an endless psychological rut that boils
down to nothing. I saw an interesting research that normally out of 100 people
in a year that would want to lose weight only 4% are really successful on
attaining their fitness goals. Why is this? Well, it all points back to the
psychological and inner aspects. A famous Wellness and Motivational Guru by the
name of Tony Robbins would suggest that for a person to be successful on the
goal that he wants to attain he should attach a significant amount of suffering
or pain to it, to the extent that the person would no longer want to go back to
the state wherein he badly needs change. This is really life-changing and I
believe this should be taught in school to students. This is a concept wherein
normally people go through life badly needs change but are unable to do so.
People sometimes are also hindered by some external and
internal factors. For instance, a lot of individuals have Glossophobia or what
is commonly known to us as fear of public speaking. I myself for one have this
kind of fear however, I really want to change this habit because this can be
very detrimental in my future growth as a student and later on in life as a
professional. going back to my point on the factors that contribute to the
blockage of growth. Emotional factor sometimes influences our decisions leading
to hesitation for change. This might be because we are afraid in of what might
others think of us or we might have the mentality of being afraid of failing at
something. To put things into perspective, it is better to have tried something
rather than not trying at all. Similarly, to one of the legends in the field of
science if Thomas Edison stopped on the 999th time in creating the
light bulb then he would have ultimately failed, but he had the persistence and
dedication to really hone and master his craft that led him to successfully
create the light bulb.
All of us have that moment in our lives when we feel like
we want to change but something is just holding us back for that change to
happen. We can all learn from the story of Santiago, accomplishing our personal
legends in life should be one of our ultimate mission and no matter how
obscured or murky our situation is right now. We must uphold the faith and keep
the torch burning for us to accomplish our goals in life. I believe that we
really have to set straight our mindset on the things we want to achieve and
even if challenges may arise along the way, always remind yourself of the
compelling reasons why you ultimately want to achieve your goal, on the other
side of the spectrum what will it mean to you if you’re not going to pursue that change. All of this is a process that we can learn from and exercise
ourselves at a full swing to really initiate and attain the ubiquitous personal
legend called “Change”.
